The image of the labyrinth or maze is frequently used to characterize New Media texts, and it is a frequent subject of post-modern and science fiction narratives. This course will both examine instances of the labyrinth in films and other media (hypertext, videogame, interactive fiction) and consider the image of a labyrinth as a metaphor for learning. We will consider the ways in which media and context influence the content of a narrative and the ways in which a sense of spatial immersion is often exploited in texts to question a "normal" sense of reality. Our goal, therefore, will be artly to overcome the disorientation of the labyrinth by creating our own space(s) within it. Some of the texts, (films and games in particular) which we will look at in this course are violent in nature and may even be disturbing. This is because the idea of being lost in a maze is almost always associated with "the uncanny" or sense of horror. Accordingly, you should enter the labyrinth with an open mind. Though this class may gaze into some dark passageways, you always have the choice to make of it what you will. This course satisfies the requirements of the Gordon Rule if all assigned work is completed. |
